The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said that the 2026 Federal Budget is designed to consolidate the gains of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda, which is already delivering positive outcomes for the nation.
In an op-ed published on Monday in national newspapers titled “A Defining Moment for Nigeria: Why Staying the Course Matters,” the Minister described the 2026 appropriation as a “Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity,” aimed at strengthening reforms and translating progress into tangible benefits for Nigerians.
According to Idris, the past 31 months have been marked by tough but necessary economic decisions taken to reverse years of stagnation and lay the foundation for sustainable growth. He noted that early signs of recovery are becoming evident, including expanding business activity, rising investor confidence, easing inflation, and improved external reserves.
“These developments are not just statistics; they represent the building blocks for lasting improvements in the everyday lives of Nigerians,” the Minister stated.
He also stressed the importance of transparency and effective communication, reaffirming the government’s commitment to keeping citizens informed about its actions, challenges, and achievements.
The Minister highlighted key social and economic interventions such as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), the Presidential CNG Initiative to cut transportation costs, and youth empowerment programmes including LEEP, the Jubilee Fellows Programme, and the 3MTT initiative. He added that food security efforts are being strengthened through the recapitalisation of the Bank of Agriculture and expanded agricultural mechanisation.
On infrastructure, Idris pointed to major ongoing projects, including the Coastal Highway, the Sokoto–Badagry Expressway, the AKK Gas Pipeline, and new rail developments aimed at boosting connectivity and reducing logistics costs nationwide.
Addressing security concerns, the Minister said the Federal Government is enhancing recruitment, equipment, and international cooperation, citing the recent rescue of abducted students in Kebbi and Niger States as evidence of renewed commitment.
While acknowledging the fatigue felt by many Nigerians, Idris assured citizens that the government is accelerating efforts to deliver relief and deepen reforms. He urged Nigerians to view nation-building as a collective responsibility by engaging constructively, safeguarding public assets, and resisting misinformation.
He commended President Tinubu’s calm and decisive leadership, noting that recent engagements with the United States have strengthened bilateral ties and supported Nigeria’s counter-insurgency efforts.
As the new year begins, the Minister called on Nigerians to remain focused and hopeful, noting that the foundation for a stronger Nigeria has been laid and must now be built collectively.
