The Federal Government says it will provide support to low-income Nigerians who may be unable to pay the full cost of electricity when a cost-reflective tariff is implemented.

According to the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), the Managing Director of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Abdu Bello Mohammed, disclosed this during a roundtable engagement with power correspondents in Abuja.

The event, themed “Cost-Reflective Tariff versus Energy Poverty: Finding a Pricing Balance in Nigeria’s Power Sector,” brought together key stakeholders who agreed that while a cost-reflective tariff is essential for the sector’s growth, there must be a simultaneous improvement in electricity availability and service quality.

Participants also identified the need to tackle technical and commercial losses, decentralize the national grid to reduce transmission inefficiencies, and increase investments in distribution infrastructure, particularly in transformers and metering to ensure better service delivery nationwide.
