The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has deployed Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams to worship centres, recreational facilities and other public venues ahead of the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
The deployment forms part of enhanced security arrangements introduced across the Federal Capital Territory to ensure peaceful and hitch-free festivities.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, said the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, had directed intensified security operations throughout the territory.
According to the statement, the Command is working jointly with other security agencies, including the Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Road Safety Corps, the military and the Nigeria Immigration Service, under a coordinated operation codenamed “Operation Sweep FCT.”
The operation has reportedly been divided into strategic sectors across Abuja, with security personnel carrying out patrols and coordinated surveillance aimed at preventing criminal activities during the festive period.
“As part of the Command’s preventive security strategy, Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams have also been directed to conduct proactive sweeps of designated worship centres, recreational facilities, and other venues expected to host large gatherings,” the statement noted.
The police also disclosed that intelligence-led raids on identified flashpoints and locations linked to illicit drug activities had been intensified, while officers were instructed to conduct operations professionally and within the confines of the law.
The commissioner further held a strategic Zoom meeting with Divisional Police Officers and Divisional Crime Officers across the Command, urging them to maintain vigilance, improve visibility policing, respond swiftly to distress calls and strengthen community engagement before, during and after the celebrations.
Residents of the FCT were advised to remain security-conscious and report suspicious activities through the emergency lines provided by the Command.
