Renowned Islamic Scholar Sheikh Dahiru Usman-Bauchi Dies at 98
Sheikh Dahiru Usman-Bauchi, one of Nigeria’s most influential Islamic scholars, has passed away at the age of 98.
Usman-Bauchi died early Thursday at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi. Malam Ahmed Mohammed, a family member, confirmed the death, stating that the revered scholar had been receiving visitors on Wednesday night before being admitted to the hospital, where he later passed away.
The funeral prayer is scheduled for Friday, November 28, in Bauchi, in accordance with Islamic rites.
Legacy of a Lifelong Scholar
Born in 1927 in Gombe, Sheikh Usman-Bauchi devoted his life to Islamic education, spiritual guidance, and promoting peaceful coexistence in Nigeria. He was the supreme leader of the Tijjaniya, a prominent Islamic Sufi group, and a recipient of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR).
His teachings emphasized moral discipline, tolerance, and strict adherence to Islamic principles, earning him widespread respect and a large following within and beyond Nigeria.
Over his lifetime, Usman-Bauchi significantly contributed to community development, mentorship of young scholars, and the strengthening of religious understanding.
He is survived by 61 children, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
