The Sokoto State Police Command has launched a new Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) as part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening security operations and improving public confidence in policing across Sokoto State.

The development was announced in a statement issued by the Command and reported by journalist Lakabiru Garba.

According to the statement, the establishment of the VCRU follows directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, in line with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Act, 2020.

The Command explained that the newly created unit replaces existing tactical formations and is specifically designed to provide swift, intelligence-led, and professional responses to violent crimes, including kidnapping, armed robbery, cult-related violence, and related offences across the state.

Speaking on the initiative, the Commissioner of Police, Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, described the launch as a strategic step toward modern, accountable, and community-oriented policing built on professionalism, integrity, and respect for human rights.

The Commissioner also announced the appointment of Nasuru Isah as Commander of the Unit.

According to the Command, the VCRU headquarters is situated at the State Command Headquarters in Sokoto, with three operational sectors established to strengthen coverage across the state:

  • Sector 1 – Eastern Axis
  •  Sector 2 – Central Axis
  • Sector 3 – Northern Axis

The police disclosed that officers deployed to the unit underwent extensive screening, vetting, and specialised training in intelligence-led operations, lawful use of force, citizens’ rights protection, firearms handling, dismantling and coupling procedures, as well as range exercises.

The Command further stressed that unlawful stop-and-search operations, harassment, profiling, extortion, and other forms of misconduct would not be tolerated under the new arrangement.

To ensure transparency and accountability, the Command introduced a dedicated complaints mechanism for residents. Members of the public can report misconduct or lodge complaints through the hotline: 08032861946, or via the Complaints Desk at the Police Public Relations Office, State Command Headquarters, Sokoto.

The Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property through professional, humane, intelligence-driven, and accountable policing while urging residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information.
