The Nasarawa State Police Command has foiled a suspected kidnapping attempt and neutralized a suspected criminal during a gun battle along the Lafia–Akwanga highway.
The incident occurred in the early hours of 23 March 2026 when a patrol team from the Nasarawa Eggon Division discovered a section of the road barricaded with stones near the Rice Mill area, a tactic often used by criminal elements to ambush motorists.
Police authorities said the operatives came under gunfire from suspected kidnappers upon arrival at the scene, prompting an immediate response. In the ensuing exchange, one suspect was neutralized, while others fled into nearby bushes, reportedly with gunshot wounds.
The Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, subsequently deployed reinforcement teams to secure the area and restore normal traffic flow along the highway.
The injured suspect was taken to a medical facility where he was later confirmed dead. He was identified as Auta Habu, said to be a resident of a Fulani settlement in Gidan Waya, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area. Preliminary investigations linked him to multiple criminal activities.
Following the operation, police operatives cleared the barricades from the road, assuring the public that the route is now safe for commuters.
The command stated that efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects and dismantle the criminal network.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities, as the police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and property across Nasarawa State.
