The trial of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was stalled on Thursday at the Federal High Court in Abuja after he claimed he had not been given access to his case file.
Kanu told the court that the absence of the file had prevented him from adequately preparing for his defence, adding that he could not proceed without familiarising himself with its contents.
The development came after the withdrawal of his legal team, led by former Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN). Kanu subsequently appealed to the court for a short adjournment to allow him time to study the case materials.
At the resumed hearing on Friday, prosecuting counsel Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) informed the court that the day’s proceedings had been slated for Kanu to open his defence.
Justice Binta Nyako is expected to rule on the adjournment request before the trial continues.
