The Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has condemned the deadly explosions in Maiduguri, describing the attacks as a brutal assault on innocent lives.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, 17 March 2026, by the Director-General of Press Affairs, Government House Gombe, Ismaila Uba Misilli, the governor expressed deep concern over the coordinated blasts that struck multiple locations in the Borno State capital.
He noted that the explosions occurred almost simultaneously at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital gate, the Monday Market Roundabout, and the Post Office area, resulting in multiple casualties.
‘Governor Yahaya, in his capacity as Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident, extending his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Borno State, particularly families who lost their loved ones.’
“This senseless act of violence is not only reprehensible but also a cruel attempt to instil fear and disrupt the fragile peace being restored in the North-East. It is an attack on our collective humanity and must be condemned in the strongest terms,” the governor stated.
Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya further sympathised with those receiving treatment and commended emergency responders and security agencies for their prompt intervention following the attacks.
He reaffirmed the commitment of northern governors to collaborate with the Federal Government and security agencies to address terrorism and restore stability across the region, urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with authorities.
“Now, more than ever, we must stand united against forces of terror. Our resolve to secure our region remains unshaken, and together, we shall overcome these cowardly acts,” he added.
Meanwhile, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, also condemned the explosions, describing them as a direct attack on civilians.
The lawmaker expressed condolences to families of victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery, while calling for strengthened security measures.
“I cannot begin to imagine the pain and burden on our governor at this moment. This is a deeply heartbreaking situation for him and for all of us. May Allah grant us comfort, strength, and healing,” the Senator stated.
Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, who is currently in Saudi Arabia performing Umrah, said the incident underscores the need for urgent and coordinated efforts to tackle insecurity in Borno State and across Nigeria.
“I urge all residents, not only in Maiduguri but across Borno State, particularly in Borno South, to stay alert and report any suspicious activity. We must not let our guard down at this critical time,” he added.
He also commended security agencies for their swift response and called for intensified efforts to prevent further attacks, especially as the Eid celebrations approach.
Earlier, the Borno State Police Command confirmed that 23 people were killed and 108 others injured in the triple suicide bomb attacks, although some sources indicate the death toll may be higher.
Authorities and political leaders have continued to call for vigilance and unity as security agencies intensify efforts to stabilise Maiduguri and prevent further incidents in the region.
