Nigeria’s Super Eagles opened their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a hard-fought victory over Tanzania’s Taifa Stars in their Group C opener.
The three-time African champions took early control of the encounter, with defender Semi Ajayi rising to give Nigeria the lead before the break. Tanzania, however, responded after halftime, drawing level and briefly threatening to swing the contest in their favour.
Nigeria’s superior quality eventually prevailed as former African Player of the Year Ademola Lookman found the net to restore the Super Eagles’ lead and secure all three points for Eric Chelle’s side.
Buoyed by the opening victory, the Super Eagles will now shift focus to their next Group C fixture against Tunisia, scheduled for Saturday, 27 December, as they look to build momentum in the tournament.
