President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Rt. Honourable Andy Burnham on his assumption of office as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

The President also congratulated the British government and people on what he described as a peaceful, orderly and seamless transition of leadership, noting that the process underscores the strength of the country’s democratic institutions and constitutional tradition.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Tinubu expressed confidence that Burnham would build on the existing relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

The statement said the President reflected on his “productive engagement” with the immediate past British Prime Minister during his official visit to the UK in March 2026 and expressed optimism that the new administration would consolidate the gains from that engagement.

Tinubu said he looked forward to exploring “vistas of partnership, collaboration and cooperation” with the United Kingdom under Burnham’s leadership.

The President also expressed his readiness to engage with the new British leader at the earliest opportunity, both bilaterally and through multilateral platforms, particularly within the Commonwealth.

According to him, such engagements would help to “deepen bilateral relations and strengthen the strategic partnership between both countries for the benefit of their peoples.”

The Federal Government also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working closely with the Burnham administration in advancing shared priorities and addressing common global challenges.

Burnham assumed office following a leadership transition that the Nigerian government described as another demonstration of the resilience of the United Kingdom’s democratic system.
