The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, has led a delegation of the electoral body to South Korea for the International Election Observation Programme (IEOP) organised by the country’s National Election Commission.
The programme, which is being held in Seoul from May 29 to June 5, 2026, brings together election administrators, observers and experts from different countries to exchange ideas and observe electoral processes.
The opening ceremony took place on Saturday in Seoul, marking the commencement of activities for participating delegations.
According to INEC, the chairman was accompanied by National Commissioner May Agbamuche-Mbu, the Chief Technical Adviser to the chairman, Dimis Mai-Lafia, and the Director of Training, Binta Kasim Mohammed.
As part of the programme, the delegation observed early voting procedures at a polling centre located in Mia-dong, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, where they examined the operational framework and logistics supporting South Korea’s electoral system.
INEC said the visit provides an opportunity to gain deeper insight into international standards in election administration, observation and electoral management.
The commission added that participation in the programme is part of its broader commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions through exposure to global best practices and innovations in election management.
According to the electoral body, lessons from the engagement are expected to contribute to ongoing efforts aimed at improving election administration and governance processes in Nigeria.
