Professor Mahmood Yakubu has handed over the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to May Agbamuche, who will serve as Acting National Chairman of the electoral body.

Agbamuche, the oldest serving National Commissioner, assumed the role following Yakubu’s completion of his two-term, ten-year tenure.

The handover took place on Tuesday during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners at the INEC headquarters in Abuja. Professor Yakubu urged commissioners and directors to extend their full support to Agbamuche pending the appointment of a substantive chairman.

Yakubu was first appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in November 2015 and reappointed for a second term in 2020 — becoming the first INEC chairman to serve two consecutive terms.

During his tenure, INEC conducted several elections, including the 2019 and 2023 general elections. President Bola Tinubu is expected to name Yakubu’s successor soon, subject to Senate confirmation.
