Vice President Kashim Shettima has commenced a two-week leave approved by President Bola Tinubu, marking his first official break since assuming office in May 2023.

The development was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications.

According to the statement, the leave, which began on Thursday, August 6, is intended to provide the Vice President with time for study, reflection and intellectual renewal to further enhance his capacity for public service.

The Office of the Vice President said the period will also enable Shettima to review ongoing government programmes, assess emerging national and global policy issues, and prepare for future responsibilities under the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The statement noted that since assuming office, Shettima has played a central role in coordinating and supervising key government initiatives, particularly in the areas of economic development, food security, humanitarian affairs, digital transformation, job creation and regional cooperation.

It added that the Vice President has continued to chair the National Economic Council (NEC), which comprises the governors of the 36 states, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other senior government officials.

The council is responsible for deliberating on economic policies and issues affecting the welfare of Nigerians.

The statement also highlighted Shettima’s representation of President Tinubu at major international and regional engagements, where he has promoted Nigeria’s interests in economic integration, peace and security, climate action, investment and sustainable development.

According to the statement:

“Senator Shettima remains deeply committed to the ideals of loyalty, duty and service that have defined his role in the administration, as well as to supporting President Tinubu’s efforts to build a more secure, productive and prosperous Nigeria.”

The Vice President is expected to resume official duties after the two-week leave with renewed energy and commitment to advancing the administration’s agenda.
