Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has presented compensation cheques worth ₦3 billion to 331 residents whose land and properties were acquired for major road infrastructure projects across the state.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony in Alausa, Ikeja, on Monday, Sanwo-Olu said the compensation fulfilled the government’s legal and moral obligation to project-affected persons whose properties were acquired for strategic road projects aimed at improving transportation, reducing traffic congestion and boosting economic growth.
The governor stressed that compensation for acquired land is a right, not an act of charity.
“This is not charity; it is justice. It is not a favour; it is your right,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu explained that each claim underwent a rigorous verification process, including enumeration, professional valuation by certified estate surveyors and ownership confirmation, to ensure only genuine beneficiaries received payment.
He acknowledged the sacrifices made by affected residents, noting that the road projects would ultimately benefit millions of Lagosians through improved connectivity and expanded economic opportunities.
The governor thanked the beneficiaries for their patience and cooperation, urging them to invest the compensation wisely and assuring them of continued support from the Lagos State Lands Bureau where necessary.
He also reassured residents whose claims are still undergoing verification that all genuine claimants would be compensated, while warning that fraudulent claims would be dealt with decisively.
Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering critical infrastructure while protecting the rights and welfare of citizens through a transparent and fair compensation process.
