OAU Orders Three-Week Break Over Student Protests

The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University has directed students to proceed on a three-week mid-semester break following escalating protests over transportation challenges on campus.

The decision followed a protest on Tuesday by members of the Great Ife Students’ Union, who blocked the university’s main gate and the Ife–Ede road, disrupting movement in and out of the institution for several hours. The students were protesting what they described as inadequate transport arrangements and broader welfare concerns.

The demonstration caused significant disruption, with access roads to the university shut for over five hours before order was restored.

In a statement issued by the University Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the Senate said the break takes immediate effect in response to recent developments on campus.

According to the statement, the decision was taken after a series of protests linked to the newly introduced transportation system, which the management said had escalated into actions considered disruptive and unsafe.

“Despite efforts to engage and appeal for calm, the situation has continued to pose concerns for the safety and well-being of members of the university community in particular and the public in general,” the statement said.

The Senate explained that the break was necessary “in the interest of restoring order, ensuring safety, and creating an enabling environment for meaningful dialogue,” directing the management to suspend academic activities immediately.

During the break, the university said management will continue engagements with relevant stakeholders to address the concerns raised and restore normalcy on campus.

It also advised parents and guardians to take note of the development and make necessary arrangements for their wards, while urging students to remain law-abiding and use the period responsibly.

“The university remains committed to the welfare of its students and to maintaining a peaceful and conducive academic environment for all,” the statement added.

Further updates are expected to be communicated by the institution.
