The Sokoto State Police Command has foiled a kidnapping attempt and neutralised an armed bandit during a joint security operation in the early hours of 23 April 2026.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmad Rufa’i, operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, in collaboration with other tactical teams, responded to a distress call at about 12:30 a.m. reporting coordinated attacks on Illela Village in Achida Town and Kwargaba Hamlet.
The statement said security personnel, who were already on high alert, swiftly mobilised to the affected communities where they engaged the attackers in a gun battle.
“Upon arrival, the security operatives were met with heavy gunfire from the bandits. In the ensuing gun duel, which lasted for several minutes, the operatives overpowered the assailants. One bandit, who was clad in a military uniform, was neutralized. The remaining hoodlums fled with bullet wounds into the adjacent Gundumi Forest,” the statement read.
The Command disclosed that prior to the arrival of security forces, a member of the Kwargaba community vigilante group was shot dead by the attackers. His body has since been recovered and handed over to his family.
Police authorities confirmed that an intensive manhunt is ongoing, with security operatives combing the Gundumi Forest and surrounding areas to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements or individuals to the nearest security formation.
The Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, assuring that further updates will be provided as the operation progresses.
