Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has stated that state governors maintain frank and honest discussions with President Bola Tinubu regarding the country’s economic situation and other pressing national issues.
Sule made the remarks on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he addressed concerns over Nigeria’s current economic realities.
“We have been very honest with him (the President) and you can bear me witness,” the governor said.
He explained that governors openly shared their positions with the president, particularly during discussions surrounding proposed tax reforms.
“At one point, when the issue of the tax reforms came in, we met with the President and told him what was on our mind, what we believed, and what we didn’t believe,” he stated.
Sule stressed the importance of transparency in governance, questioning the rationale behind withholding truth from the president.
“If you are not telling the president the truth, how can you even be saying you are fighting the president?” he added.
The governor noted that while not all governors may speak up, open dialogue remains critical to addressing national challenges.
“What we are saying is that these are the issues; we have to tell each other the truth. I can’t tell you that every one of us is like that. There are some of the governors who may not say anything at all,” he said.
He further disclosed that President Tinubu himself had acknowledged ongoing security concerns during a recent engagement with governors.
“The most important thing is that the president himself tells the truth to us. Yesterday we went to eat lunch with him, he was the one who brought out the aspect of insecurity. He said we still have issues with insecurity, what is happening to state police?” he added.
