President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a state of emergency on training facilities for the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other internal security agencies, expressing concern over the deteriorating and outdated condition of the institutions.
The announcement was made by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, who serves as Chairman of the National Economic Council (NEC) Ad-hoc Committee on the overhaul of security training institutions, during an on-the-spot inspection of facilities in Lagos.
Governor Mbah, who was accompanied by Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, Committee Secretary and former Inspector-General of Police Alkali Usman Baba, and Assistant Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu, in charge of the Special Protection Unit (SPU), said the committee has 30 days to submit a comprehensive report to the NEC for implementation.
According to Mbah, the President expressed deep concern that security personnel were still being trained in outdated facilities, despite being tasked with protecting citizens and upholding human dignity.
He explained that President Tinubu issued the directive during the last NEC meeting on October 23, stressing that the current state of training institutions “did not align with his dream of growing the economy to one trillion dollars in the next five years,” while emphasizing the urgent need for modernization.
Governor Mbah reiterated that the committee’s mandate includes assessing current infrastructure, identifying gaps, and recommending immediate and long-term reforms to ensure that security agencies are better equipped to handle modern challenges.
