Injured Mbappe Faces Fan Backlash After Sardinia Trip Ahead of El Clasico

Kylian Mbappé is facing mounting criticism from sections of Real Madrid supporters after taking a trip to Sardinia while recovering from a hamstring injury, just days before a crucial El Clasico showdown against FC Barcelona.

The French forward, who was granted rest days by the club alongside teammates Thibaut Courtois and Arda Güler, has drawn backlash from fans who view the timing of the trip as inappropriate.

Discontent intensified on social media, where some supporters circulated an edited image of Mbappe bearing a “Fuera (out)” label. The image, initially shared by a satirical account, later appeared in the comment sections of the club’s official posts, reflecting growing frustration among a segment of the fanbase.

An online petition has also gained traction, urging fans to demand changes within the club. “If you believe change is necessary, do not remain silent: sign this petition and defend what you believe is best for the future of the club,” the message reads.

The controversy deepened after widely circulated photos showed Mbappe with Spanish actress Ester Expósito during the same period Real Madrid were preparing for a key La Liga fixture against Espanyol. The club went on to win the match 2–0, keeping their title hopes alive.

Reacting to the situation, head coach Álvaro Arbeloa maintained that players are entitled to manage their personal time, stating that “each player does what they consider appropriate in their free time” and that it was “none of my business”. However, his subsequent remarks were widely interpreted as a subtle critique of the forward.

“We didn’t build Real Madrid with players who play in tuxedos, but with players who finish matches with shirts full of sweat and mud, through effort and sacrifice,” he said.

Madrid is “a club where, fortunately, no player has ever been, is, or ever will be bigger than Real Madrid,” Arbeloa added.

Responding to the criticism, Mbappe’s representatives told AFP that “part of the criticism is based on an over-interpretation of elements linked to a recovery period that is strictly supervised by the club”, adding that it does not reflect “the reality of the commitment and daily work Kylian puts in for the team”.

Earlier this season, the France captain addressed the scrutiny he faces during an appearance on *The Bridge* podcast, hosted by teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni.

“I’ve reached a point where you’re going to get criticised whatever you do, so you might as well do what you want – at least then you stay true to yourself,” Mbappe said.

Despite scoring 41 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions, Mbappe has faced increasing scrutiny since returning from injury in mid-March, with critics pointing to what they describe as an overly individualistic style of play.

Reports in Spanish media also suggest the forward may be experiencing growing isolation within the dressing room, particularly amid frustrations over a trophyless season so far.

Post-match comments from teammates Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham have further fuelled speculation of internal tensions.

“We fought and we played together. When we play like that, we are better and stronger,” Vinicius said after the win, while Bellingham urged unity on social media, calling on teammates to remain “together” and fully committed “until the very last whistle” of the season.

The unfolding situation adds pressure on Real Madrid ahead of their high-stakes encounter with Barcelona, with both on-field performance and dressing room harmony now under intense scrutiny.
