The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday resumed plenary after a 10-week recess, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio presiding over the session.
A notable returnee to the chamber was the embattled Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who rejoined her colleagues following a six-month suspension.
In a symbolic show of solidarity, some senators appeared in Palestinian colours and attire, voicing support for the people of Palestine.
In his opening address, Senator Akpabio charged lawmakers to recommit themselves to accountability, discipline, and purposeful governance. “To the citizens of Nigeria, we hear you. You asked us not for excuses, but for results. We will remain accountable and responsive,” he stated.
The National Assembly had earlier adjourned for its annual recess on July 24, 2025, with both the Senate and House of Representatives expected to reconvene on September 23. However, the resumption was postponed by two weeks, shifting the date to October 7.
The annual recess forms part of the legislature’s calendar, allowing lawmakers to focus on constituency engagements, complete pending committee reports, and perform oversight duties.
