The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has concluded the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for its 2027 presidential ticket, with former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, reportedly emerging as the only aspirant to obtain the forms.
Party sources disclosed that Obi was the sole applicant before the deadline for presidential form collection closed on Sunday, May 17, 2026, placing him in a strong position ahead of the party’s selection process.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, recently defected to the NDC after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move that has continued to generate reactions within Nigeria’s political space ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Secretary, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the NDC confirmed that while the presidential nomination window has officially closed, the deadline for governorship, National Assembly and State Assembly forms has been extended to midnight on May 24, 2026.
According to the party, screening of aspirants will commence on May 19 and continue until May 26, 2026, after which successful candidates will proceed to the nomination stage scheduled for May 20 to May 26.
The party also outlined several requirements for aspirants, including submission of academic certificates, voter identification cards, birth certificates or sworn declarations of age, passport photographs, party membership documents, and six copies of their curriculum vitae.
The NDC stated that the screening process would evaluate aspirants based on competence, character, grassroots support and compliance with zoning and local political considerations.
It added that the exercise would also reflect the party’s affirmative action policy for women, youths and persons with disabilities.
With no other aspirant reportedly purchasing the presidential nomination forms before the deadline, Obi is expected to emerge as the party’s consensus presidential candidate once the screening and clearance process are concluded.
