Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Monday held a closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan as part of ongoing political consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi disclosed the engagement in a statement shared via his official X handle, noting that he was accompanied by prominent leaders from Nigeria’s South-East region.
According to Obi, discussions during the visit extended beyond electoral considerations to broader national concerns, including governance and development.
He described the deliberations as “frank” and “thoughtful,” adding that they focused on repositioning the country toward unity, security, stability, productivity, and inclusive governance.
“At a time when our nation continues to grapple with economic hardship, rising insecurity, and deepening social divisions, it has become imperative that leaders across regions come together to reflect, consult, and act in the overall interest of the Nigerian people,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor stressed the need for a change in leadership approach, advocating for leaders guided by “competence, character, capacity, and compassion” rather than personal ambition.
He also called for a transition from a consumption-driven economy to a production-oriented system that fully harnesses Nigeria’s human and natural resources.
On the upcoming elections, Obi described the 2027 polls as a defining moment for the country, urging stakeholders to view the process as an opportunity for meaningful change.
“The 2027 elections must therefore not just be seen as another political exercise, but as a critical opportunity to reset the trajectory of our country,” he stated.
He added that governance priorities should centre on improving citizens’ welfare, including access to quality education, support for entrepreneurs, and enhanced national security.
Obi maintained that Nigeria’s recovery is achievable through collective effort and national unity.
“I remain convinced that through sincere dialogue, unity of purpose, and a firm commitment to doing what is right, Nigeria can and will rise again,” he added.
