Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has declared Friday, August 14, a work-free day for public service workers ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

The directive was contained in a circular issued by the Head of Service, Elder Ayanleye Aina, and made public by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed.

The government said the work-free day would enable workers to travel where necessary and adequately prepare to exercise their constitutional right to vote.

The directive covers all categories of public workers, except those assigned to essential and emergency duties.

Ahead of the election, Adeleke urged workers, as well as their relatives and friends, to turn out massively and protect their votes to ensure what he described as the continuation of good governance in the state.

In a pre-election message, the governor commended labour leaders and public servants for their support, while highlighting what he described as the harmonious relationship between his administration and the workforce.

“The time for action has come. As formal workers at state establishments, I task you to mobilise informal workers, artisans, and professional bodies. We must remain strong in defence of our constitutional rights to vote and be voted for,” Adeleke said.

He urged the electorate to defend the achievements of his administration over the past three and a half years.

“Ours is a workers-friendly government which has delivered across the board to labour and the people of Osun. We cannot and must not allow a return to the dark days,” he added.
