Sixty-eight passengers escaped death on Thursday after an Enugu Air aircraft crash-landed at the Benin Airport in Edo State.

The aircraft, with registration number 5N-ENR, was carrying 68 passengers, in addition to its crew members, when the incident occurred.

A source at the Benin Airport said the aircraft was operating an Enugu–Benin–Lagos commercial flight when it crash-landed.

Further details indicated that some passengers sustained injuries in the incident.

The source said the aircraft, which had originated from Lagos and arrived in Benin, was cleared to land but reportedly overshot the runway, apparently due to heavy rainfall.

Relatives who had arrived at the airport to receive passengers were seen thanking God after the incident, while some of the injured were rushed to hospital for treatment.

Officials of Enugu Air at the airport declined to comment on the development.

A staff member of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), who also declined to speak on the incident, said investigations would be conducted by the appropriate authorities.

“I cannot tell you anything because investigation would be carried out by necessary authorities and the reports would be sent to our head office.”
