Tragedy struck in Kano on Thursday, 26 March 2026, as a woman, Hafsat Yusuf, died hours after delivering quintuplets at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.

Hafsat gave birth to three boys and two girls via Caesarean section at about 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

Her husband, Salisu Nafiu, confirmed her death, stating that she passed away around 1 a.m. on Thursday at the hospital.

“She delivered the babies successfully in the afternoon, but we lost her in the early hours of today,” Nafiu said. “It is a painful loss for our family.”

Despite the loss, Nafiu disclosed that all five newborns are alive and receiving medical care.

“The babies are stable and receiving proper care from the doctors,” he added.

According to him, the delivery marked Hafsat’s ninth childbirth, making the development both remarkable and emotionally overwhelming for the family.

A source at the hospital said the infants are under close monitoring.

“The babies are being given specialised attention to ensure their survival and healthy development,” the source said.

The Kano State Ministry of Health had earlier announced that the state government would take full responsibility for the medical care of the quintuplets.

“The government is committed to supporting the children and ensuring they receive the best possible healthcare services,” the ministry said in a statement.

The incident has drawn widespread sympathy from residents, many describing it as a moment marked by both joy and sorrow for the bereaved family.
