Authorities in the United Kingdom will impose airspace restrictions and deploy armed police officers in Windsor ahead of a state visit by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu next week.
Tinubu is expected to arrive with his wife, Oluremi Tinubu, on Wednesday, March 18, for a reception hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Thames Valley Police said it is working with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, the Royal Household, and other security partners to ensure the safety of the visit.
The police said existing airspace restrictions over Windsor Castle, which operate throughout the year, will be extended on March 18 from 7:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.
Chief Superintendent Adrian Hall of the force’s Joint Operations Unit said the air restrictions form part of a broader security plan for the high-profile event.
“The air restrictions are just one part of our robust security operation for the state visit of Nigerian President Tinubu next week, with many measures you will see and others you will not,” Hall said.
He added that the force has extensive experience policing royal events in Windsor and has carried out significant planning and preparation for the visit.
Hall warned that authorities will strictly enforce the airspace restrictions, noting that any violation would constitute a criminal offence under the Air Navigation Order and could result in arrest.
According to the police, officers with specialist capabilities including search teams, mounted units, road policing officers, and armed personnel, will be deployed across Windsor. Neighbourhood policing teams and resources from Project Servator will also be engaged to interact with the public and enhance security.
Authorities will further utilise an extensive closed-circuit television network, hostile vehicle mitigation barriers, and other security measures to safeguard the event.
Hall urged residents and visitors to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity by contacting police through 101 or speaking with officers on duty, while emergencies should be reported via 999.
Road closures and parking restrictions are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, March 17, with possible temporary disruptions expected on roads in and around Windsor.
The police added that enforcement of the airspace restrictions will be supported by the Civil Aviation Authority and National Air Traffic Services. Individuals with legitimate reasons to operate drones were advised to request permission through the designated police email channel.
