Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has expressed deep sympathy with the people of Essa in Katcha Local Government Area over the tragic tanker explosion that claimed several lives and left many others injured.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, Governor Bago described the incident as “worrisome, unfortunate, and pathetic.”
“This is yet another painful, difficult, and tragic one for the people and the state government,” he said.
The governor prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He lamented that despite repeated public sensitization, some residents still risk their lives by scooping fuel from fallen tankers.
“It is disheartening how people continue to approach a fallen tanker to scoop its contents despite several warnings on the dangers of such actions,” he stated.
Governor Bago urged residents to prioritize safety and value their lives regardless of economic hardship.
He also commended the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) for its prompt response and assured that the state government, through relevant ministries and agencies, will provide necessary support to victims and their families.
Reports indicate that the explosion occurred while residents were scooping fuel from the fallen tanker in Essa community. Several people were killed, and others sustained various degrees of burns. The injured victims are receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Bida.
