Wike Warns Against Reckless Car Racing in Abuja Residential Areas

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has warned motorists and thrill-seekers that the FCT Administration will take decisive action against organised and reckless car racing in residential neighbourhoods across Abuja, describing the practice as a threat to public safety.

Speaking with journalists during a routine inspection of ongoing projects on Monday, Wike acknowledged the positive feedback on the newly constructed road networks in the capital but cautioned that the roads must not be turned into racing tracks.

“First of all, they are trying to show how beautiful the roads are, but then they forget there are aspects of it that also pose danger to innocent citizens,” he said.

“I appeal to them to understand that their rights have limitations and life is more important.”

The minister said the administration had yet to receive any formal written petition identifying specific locations where organised races were taking place. However, he assured residents that the authorities would address the issue through existing enforcement mechanisms.

According to him, the FCT Traffic Management Department would be engaged to ensure compliance with traffic regulations and curb the dangerous practice.

“Rest assured that we will do everything possible to see that we don’t allow car racing within residential areas,” Wike said.

He, however, distinguished between residential roads and major highways, adding, “But if it is on the highway, well, that we will not stop.”

Wike stressed that motorsport activities should be confined to designated tracks or approved non-residential areas, noting that individual freedoms must not come at the expense of public safety.

He added that the FCT Administration would work with law enforcement and traffic regulatory agencies to increase patrols and monitor identified high-risk locations in residential districts as part of efforts to prevent accidents and safeguard residents.
