The Nigeria Democratic Congress on Friday commenced its first nationwide congresses, marking a key step in its internal democratic process ahead of its inaugural national convention scheduled for May 9, 2026.
This was disclosed in a statement by the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Abdulmumin Abdulsalam, who said the exercise signals the formal rollout of its organisational structure across the country.
According to the timetable, ward and polling unit congresses are scheduled for May 1 and 2, while local government congresses will hold on May 4.
The party explained that the exercises will lead up to its maiden National Convention in Abuja on May 9, where key leadership positions and policy directions are expected to be decided.
The party leadership expressed confidence in its state and national officials, saying they are well positioned to ensure the congresses are conducted in line with the party’s constitution and established guidelines.
It added that the process is aimed at strengthening internal democracy and consolidating its structures ahead of future electoral engagements.
