FG Monitoring Middle East Tensions to Safeguard Nigeria’s Economy — Edun

The Federal Government of Nigeria says it is closely monitoring escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel and Iran to protect Nigeria’s economic stability.

The assurance followed a meeting of the Economic Management Team (EMT) chaired by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, to assess the potential implications of the crisis for the Nigerian economy.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Federal Ministry of Finance, the government said growing global uncertainty—particularly fears of disruptions to key energy supply routes such as the Strait of Hormuz—has already caused volatility in crude oil prices and financial markets.

According to the EMT, the crisis could impact Nigeria through higher energy prices, shifts in capital flows toward safer global assets and rising logistics costs.

The team added that it is closely monitoring key economic indicators, including crude oil prices, exchange rate movements and international capital flows.

Despite the uncertainty, the Federal Government noted that Nigeria is entering the period with improving economic fundamentals, citing real GDP growth of 4.07 per cent recorded in the fourth quarter of 2025.

It assured Nigerians that authorities remain vigilant and will take necessary measures to protect the economy and sustain growth.

Meanwhile, the government had earlier disclosed that plans are underway to repatriate Nigerians stranded in parts of the Middle East once regional airspace reopens.

The Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, made the clarification while responding to complaints from a Nigerian stranded in Qatar.

She explained that evacuation flights could not commence immediately because the airspace in the region remains closed.

“And as for repatriation flights, the skies are currently unsafe to fly. Luckily, a flight came in from the United Arab Emirates to Lagos two days ago, just before another strike and closure of the airspace.

“Once the airspace opens, the multi-agency FGN team on crises and evacuation is on standby. Our prayers are with you and all our people in affected countries,” she said.
