The Nasarawa State Police Command has cautioned against a planned protest reportedly organised by Concern Women in Politics in Lafia Local Government Area over the alleged arbitrary arrest and detention of suspected followers of retired Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu.
The group is reportedly mobilising about 10,000 women for the planned street protest on Monday, August 17, 2026.
In a statement, the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, acknowledged citizens’ right to express grievances through lawful means but urged the organisers to reconsider the planned street protest, citing the fragile security situation in Lafia.
The Commissioner advised the organisers to explore alternative and lawful channels, including dialogue with relevant authorities, to seek redress for their grievances.
He warned that large gatherings could be hijacked by miscreants, potentially disrupting socio-economic activities, infringing on the rights of other residents and threatening public peace.
CP Mohammed assured residents that the Command remains committed to protecting citizens’ fundamental rights and maintaining peace and public order across the state.
He, however, warned that anyone found engaging in acts capable of causing a breach of public peace, obstructing lawful activities, destroying property or attacking persons would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The Police Command urged residents of Lafia and the state at large to remain calm, law-abiding and peaceful.
