Operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Lafia have arrested a 62-year-old man, Mamuda Hassan, for allegedly circulating counterfeit ₦1,000 notes at the Lafia cattle market.

The suspect, a resident of Anchor Zaria in Kaduna State, was apprehended following credible intelligence while reportedly distributing the fake currency within the busy market.

During preliminary interrogation, Hassan confessed that the counterfeit notes were supplied by an accomplice based in Mararaba Akunza area of Lafia, who is currently on the run.

The Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, urged members of the public—particularly traders, POS operators, fuel attendants, and transport workers—to exercise heightened caution during transactions.

He outlined key indicators of counterfeit currency, including poor print quality, reduced size compared to genuine notes, duplicated serial numbers, and absence of standard security features.

The CP advised that anyone in possession of, or attempting to circulate, suspected fake notes should promptly report to the nearest police station.

The suspect is expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing accomplice.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to combating financial crimes and safeguarding residents from economic exploitation.

Authorities noted that the circulation of counterfeit currency undermines public confidence and disproportionately affects small-scale businesses, stressing the importance of public vigilance and timely reporting in sustaining economic stability.
