Security agencies in Edo State have arrested over 50 persons in connection with the violent protest that erupted in Ekpoma, headquarters of Esan West Local Government Area, last Saturday.
The arrests were carried out in different parts of the town following reports of widespread destruction during the protest, which was initially sparked by community grievances.
The demonstration later degenerated into violence, with several shops reportedly looted and the palace of the Onojie of Ekpoma attacked.
Those arrested were conveyed in a police van to a court in the state, where they are expected to be formally charged. Relatives and sympathisers of the suspects were seen around the court premises awaiting the outcome of proceedings.
Journalists were denied access to the courtroom as security operatives cordoned off the area while the suspects were being arraigned.
Confirming the development, the Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Eno Ikoedem, said the suspects were apprehended for their alleged involvement in the looting and violent acts that accompanied the protest.
He added that investigations were ongoing to identify other individuals connected to the unrest.
