The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has confirmed that it has submitted formal complaints to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) over refereeing decisions in its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final match against Nigeria.
The confirmation was made on Monday via the official X handle of the Équipe d’Algérie de football, with the federation requesting a formal investigation into what it described as controversial officiating during the encounter.
In a statement, the FAF said it could not ignore decisions taken by the match officials, noting that they raised serious concerns and triggered widespread dissatisfaction.
“The Algerian Football Federation cannot overlook the refereeing decisions in the last match, which raised questions and caused widespread dissatisfaction, as they undermined the credibility of African refereeing and do not serve the image of African football internationally,” the federation stated.
Algeria were eliminated from the tournament following a 2–0 defeat to Nigeria on Saturday, with goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams sending the Super Eagles into the semi-finals.
The match ended in disorder, as Algerian players confronted the referees on the pitch at the final whistle. Videos circulating on social media showed scuffles involving players and match officials, as well as an attempted pitch invasion by fans, which was quickly contained by stadium security.
CAF, in a separate statement on Monday, announced that it had opened an investigation into alleged misconduct by players and officials during the match. The football body said it had reviewed match reports and video footage indicating potentially unacceptable behaviour and had referred the matter to its Disciplinary Board for further action.
Despite the controversy, the FAF urged supporters to remain behind the national team, describing the current squad as one in a rebuilding phase. The federation stressed the importance of drawing lessons from the AFCON campaign ahead of future competitions, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“Accordingly, the Algerian Football Federation has formally contacted CAF and FIFA by submitting an official complaint, accompanied by a request to open an investigation, to clarify what occurred and take appropriate action in accordance with applicable regulations,” the statement added.
The federation also expressed confidence in its players, technical crew and football administrators, commending their dedication and commitment throughout the tournament.
