Lafia Modern Market in Nasarawa State was abruptly closed by Commissioner Dr. Margaret Elayo of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, leaving numerous traders and business owners stranded as the market gates were locked. This decisive move, enacted at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, was the result of ongoing unsanitary conditions at the market, which had prompted numerous warnings and inspections from the commissioner aimed at improving waste disposal compliance.
Despite repeated discussions with market management and occupants regarding proper waste management practices, compliance remained significantly low. The situation reached a tipping point as the entrance to the market became increasingly cluttered with refuse, contributing to air pollution issues that affected both traders and customers. In light of these persistent sanitation violations, Dr. Elayo felt compelled to take action, emphasizing the negative impact of poor waste practices on the environment and the health of the community.
As the market’s gates remained locked, traders expressed their frustration, emphasizing their financial contributions to the market management bureau for waste services, which they claim had failed to uphold their end of the bargain. Many are now urging the state government to intervene and address the sanitation issues without depriving them of access to their livelihoods. The closure highlights the ongoing struggle for proper waste management in the region and the need for a collaborative effort between the government, market management, and traders to foster a cleaner and healthier environment.
