The National Council of State has approved the nomination of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, as the next Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The announcement was made on Thursday in a statement by the Special Assistant to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, President Bola Tinubu presented Amupitan’s name to the Council to fill the vacancy created by the exit of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who served from 2015 until October 2025.

“Council members unanimously supported the nomination, with Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo describing Amupitan as a man of integrity,” Onanuga said.

In line with constitutional provisions, President Tinubu will forward Amupitan’s name to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
