As part of efforts to restore Nigeria’s global reputation, the Senate on Tuesday considered a bill seeking to impose a 10-year passport ban on Nigerians convicted of crimes overseas.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Abubakar Bello (Niger North), aims to amend the Passport (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, introducing tougher sanctions to deter criminal behaviour by Nigerians abroad and to rehabilitate the country’s international image.
Presenting the bill on behalf of the sponsor, Senator Onawo Ogwoshi described it as “imperative and compelling,” stressing that it would serve as a strong deterrent to those tarnishing Nigeria’s reputation through criminal acts.
“Innocent and patriotic Nigerians suffer harassment in airports, visa denials, and constant suspicion because of the actions of a few. The green passport, once a symbol of pride, is now widely disrespected. That is nothing less than a state of emergency,” he lamented.
Under the proposed law, any Nigerian convicted in a foreign country would have their international passport withdrawn for 10 years after completing their sentence. Lawmakers say the move is intended not only to penalize offenders but also to demonstrate Nigeria’s commitment to integrity and accountability on the global stage.
