President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Team Nigeria for its outstanding performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, commending the athletes and officials for representing the country with honour, dignity and pride.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the President praised the Nigerian contingent for their courage and dedication throughout the competition.
“Whether on the podium or through courageous performances in the competition, every member of Team Nigeria has represented our nation with honour, dignity, and pride,” the statement read.
Tinubu also expressed appreciation to the athletes, coaches, technical officials, medical personnel and administrators whose efforts contributed to Nigeria’s successful outing at the Games.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in sports development, strengthening sporting institutions, improving training facilities and creating more opportunities for Nigerian athletes to excel on the continental and global stage.
“My administration remains steadfast in its resolve to invest in sports development, strengthen our sporting institutions, improve training facilities, and create greater opportunities for our talented athletes to excel on the continental and global stage,” he said.
Team Nigeria concluded the Games with 24 medals—10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze—finishing seventh overall and emerging as Africa’s highest-ranked nation at the competition.
Tinubu described the achievement as a testament to the team’s hard work and perseverance, adding that the experience gained would serve as a strong foundation for even greater success in future international competitions.
He also said the athletes’ achievements would inspire more young Nigerians to embrace discipline, commitment and national service.
The President further commended the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) for their continued support for sports development and urged Team Nigeria to remain focused in pursuit of greater excellence.
