Activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has declared support for the senatorial ambition of fellow activist Aisha Yesufu ahead of the 2027 general elections, while criticising her decision to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Sowore made the remarks on Monday during an interview on Channels Television, where he insisted that activists must actively participate in politics rather than remain on the sidelines.
“No, I totally support her. I’ve always told her that good people, people who believe that they can do things, should get into politics,” he said.
According to Sowore, political participation is one of the most important forms of activism needed to transform society.
“The business of politics is actually the biggest activism that has to be done to save society,” he added.
While expressing confidence in Yesufu’s ambition, Sowore criticised her political alignment, saying she joined the wrong party and should have teamed up with his political movement instead.
“So I totally support her, and I hope she wins. Even though I think that she’s in the wrong party, she should have joined our party,” he stated.
Aisha Yesufu recently resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress, where she announced her intention to contest for the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat in the 2027 elections.
Explaining her decision, Yesufu said her move was driven by a deeper political conviction and her belief in the leadership of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
“This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the African Democratic Congress to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works,” she said.
The activist further disclosed that her involvement in the NDC goes beyond ordinary membership, as she intends to actively seek elective office.
“This time I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat,” she stated.
Yesufu also maintained that she exited the ADC after properly concluding her responsibilities within the party and ensuring a smooth transition.
