Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has granted bail to a former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, alongside two other defendants, in the sum of ₦500 million.

The judge ruled that each defendant must provide two sureties who own landed property in Asokoro, Maitama or Gwarinpa areas of the Federal Capital Territory. Justice Nwite further directed that the title documents of the properties be verified by the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court, while the sureties are required to depose to an affidavit of means.

As part of the bail conditions, Malami and his sureties were ordered to deposit their international passports with the court and submit two recent passport photographs each. The former Attorney General was also barred from travelling outside the country without prior approval of the court.

Pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions, Justice Nwite ordered that Malami be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

The court subsequently fixed February 17 for the commencement of trial in the case.

The same bail conditions were extended to Abdulaziz Malami, the former AGF’s son, and Hajia Asabe Bashir, an employee of Rahamaniyya Properties Limited.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had filed a 16-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering against Malami, his son and his wife.
