The Sokoto State Police Command, under the leadership of CP Ahmed Musa, psc, has announced a major breakthrough in its efforts to dismantle criminal groups across the state following the arrest of three suspected members of the notorious cult group known as “Sai Malam.”
The suspects were apprehended late Friday, November 28, 2025, at about 2300hrs during a targeted operation executed by the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit after receiving credible intelligence.
The principal suspect, Usman Shu’aibu (M), and two accomplices confessed to being active members of the cult group. According to investigators, the suspects revealed they were initiated through a private WhatsApp group called “Red Chamber,” which was created specifically to recruit and indoctrinate unsuspecting young people into criminal activities.
According to the police, the WhatsApp group was used to lure youths into acts including:
- Witchcraft and ritual practices
- The pursuit of demonic powers
- Homosexual activities
- Organised thuggery and violence
The Command described the revelations as deeply concerning, particularly the exploitation of digital platforms to corrupt and manipulate vulnerable youths.
The Police Command urged parents and guardians to be vigilant, especially regarding their children’s activities on social media platforms. They encouraged families to:
- Monitor smartphone and social media usage closely
- Educate their wards about the dangers of online recruitment
- Watch for sudden behavioural changes
- Report suspicious online groups or influences to security agencies
Speaking on the development, CP Ahmed Musa reassured residents that the Command is responding decisively to the concerns raised by affected communities.
“We want to assure the good people of Sokoto that we have been listening to their concerns. The arrest of these suspects is a clear demonstration that their calls for action have been answered. Our efforts have disrupted a key cell of this notorious group, and we are committed to ensuring the safety and security of every citizen”
The Command revealed that investigations are ongoing to track other suspected members of the “Sai Malam” cult and dismantle their operations fully.
The Sokoto State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property through intelligence-led operations and active community cooperation.
