The 2025 Nigeria National League (NNL) kicked off on a high note in Lafia, Nasarawa State, as Basira Football Club claimed a 3–1 victory against Mighty Jets from Jos, Plateau State. The match, held at Lafia City Stadium, showcased the excitement and potential of grassroots football in the region.

Abubakar Yusuf opened the scoring in the 6th minute, followed by a spectacular solo goal from Cartie Don just before halftime, giving Basira FC a commanding lead.

Governor of Nasarawa State, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, officially declared the competition open, highlighting the administration’s commitment to promoting sports for youth empowerment and community development.

Mighty Jets’ Head Coach, Ere Dokubo, acknowledged that the early goal unsettled his team but remained hopeful for better performances in upcoming matches. Basira FC’s Head Coach, Aminu Musa, expressed delight at the positive start, commending his players for their performance and the unwavering support of their fans.

Chairman of Basira United, Salisu Galadima, also praised the team’s dedication, noting that the victory reflects their hard work in preparation for the league. Abubakar Yusuf, named Man of the Match, dedicated his performance to God and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to score in such a significant game.

George Aluo, Chairman of the NNL, commended the Nasarawa State Government for hosting the league and described Governor Sule as a “sports-loving leader.” He also announced a Super Four tournament later in the season to determine the 2025 NNL champion, further encouraging football development and community involvement.
