The newly appointed Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Major General Waidi Shaibu, has pledged to confront and dismantle the terrorist group known as Lakurawa, which has been responsible for violent attacks in parts of northern Nigeria.

Shaibu made the vow during his Senate screening on Wednesday, where he recounted his extensive military experience and past counterinsurgency efforts in Borno State.

“We defeated Boko Haram insurgents in 2015, and a significant number of terrorists surrendered during my tenure,” he told lawmakers.

The Army Chief said technology played a vital role in previous military successes and revealed that he had been involved in several high-impact operations over the last five years that “led to the decimation of many terrorist elements.”

Looking ahead, Major General Shaibu said his leadership would focus on professional development, improved troop welfare, and resource efficiency within the Nigerian Army.

“The Army will deal decisively with the new bandit group known as Lakurawa. It requires a whole-of-society approach,” he said.
“While security is not cheap, we will ensure effective management of available resources.”

During the session, senators commended his record and asked him to take a bow after his presentation.
