The Zamfara State Police Command has arrested two suspects and recovered two locally fabricated AK-47 rifles along the Gusau–Funtua Highway as part of efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms in the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Balarabe Maikaba (psc+), reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to sustaining peace and strengthening security across Zamfara State.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, operatives of the Safer Highway Patrol (SHP) attached to the Department of Operations (DOPS) intercepted a Volkswagen Golf vehicle with registration number ABUJA KUJ 893 CK at about 12:00 noon on 11 January 2026.
The interception occurred during a routine stop-and-search operation between Kotorkoshi and Tazame areas along the Gusau–Funtua Highway.
The statement said one Samaila Na’ibi, a resident of Kuya Village via Kekun Waje District, Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, was arrested while in possession of two locally fabricated AK-47 rifles concealed inside a sack.
The vehicle was reportedly driven by Samaila Aminu, a male from Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Following the arrest, the vehicle was impounded, while the suspects and recovered firearms were taken into custody at the Kotorkoshi Divisional Police Headquarters.
The Police Command disclosed that the suspects and exhibits would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for thorough investigation, after which appropriate legal action would be taken.
The Command urged members of the public to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information to enhance public safety and security across the state.
