The Nasarawa State Government has cautioned residents against circulating unverified claims of abductions, warning that such rumours heighten fear and disrupt public order.
The Commissioner on Special Duties (Security), retired CP Usman Baba, issued the warning after a security meeting with Deputy Governor Dr. Emmanuel Akabe and the state Commissioner of Police, CP Shettima Jauro Mohammed.
The advisory comes in response to reports alleging multiple abductions in the state — claims the police say are entirely false. According to CP Mohammed, the rumour stemmed from the rescue of two prospective corps members kidnapped while travelling to the NYSC camp in Taraba State. He explained that the successful operation appears to have been misconstrued as a wider security incident in Nasarawa.
CP Mohammed condemned the spread of misinformation, noting that false alarms create unwarranted panic and strain security operations. He urged residents to share only credible intelligence with law enforcement, assuring the public that all information will be treated confidentially.
He reaffirmed that security agencies are maintaining vigilance across the state and will take action against individuals or groups responsible for peddling falsehoods.
The government appealed for calm, emphasising that both the administration and security operatives are working collaboratively to safeguard communities. Citizens were encouraged to verify information before sharing it and to support ongoing efforts to keep the state safe.
