The Nigeria Police Force has announced the temporary suspension of the enforcement of vehicle tinted glass permits.
The decision followed a meeting between the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, and a delegation of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) led by its President, Afam Osigwe (SAN), at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.
In a statement, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, said discussions focused on the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991 and the need for stronger collaboration between the Police and the Bar to uphold the rule of law and public confidence.
Hundeyin noted that while no court order currently restrains the Police from enforcing the Act, the Force decided to suspend enforcement “in consideration of the interest of Nigerians and out of regard for the NBA,” pending the outcome of a Motion on Notice scheduled for hearing on October 16, 2025, at the Federal High Court, Warri, Delta State.
To further enhance cooperation, the Police and the NBA have set up a joint committee to strengthen collaboration and promote mutual understanding between both institutions.
The Police urged vehicle owners to use this period to regularise their documents and comply with regulations governing the use of shaded or tinted glass in Nigeria.
Inspector-General Egbetokun reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to enforcing all existing laws fairly, transparently, and with respect for citizens’ rights.
The development comes amid an ongoing legal challenge by the NBA, which in September sued the IGP over the tinted glass permit policy introduced in April 2025. The association described the policy as illegal and a violation of citizens’ rights, questioning the validity of the Motor Tinted Glass (Prohibition) Act — a decree dating back to the military era of 1991.
