The Oyo State House of Assembly has approved Governor Seyi Makinde’s request to proceed on his annual leave, paving the way for his deputy, Bayo Lawal, to oversee the affairs of the state during his absence.

The leave will commence on August 10, 2026, and end on September 11, 2026, while the governor is expected to resume official duties on September 14.

The approval followed the consideration of a formal letter from the governor during Thursday’s plenary, in line with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which requires a governor to notify the legislature before proceeding on leave.

The Deputy Speaker of the House, Muhammed Fadeyi, who presided over the session in the absence of the Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin, read the governor’s correspondence to lawmakers.

After deliberation, the Assembly approved the request and expressed confidence in the continuity of governance under the deputy governor.

With the approval, Lawal will serve as Acting Governor throughout the duration of Makinde’s leave.

In his letter, Makinde informed the Assembly of his intention to embark on his annual leave and sought legislative approval to enable the deputy governor act on his behalf during the period.

The lawmakers reaffirmed that Lawal would oversee the day-to-day administration of the state, ensuring uninterrupted governance until the governor returns to office.

Speaking after the approval, Fadeyi wished Makinde a restful and refreshing leave, while reaffirming the legislature’s commitment to maintaining cordial relations with the executive arm in the interest of Oyo residents.

The Deputy Speaker also expressed confidence in Lawal’s ability to provide effective leadership during the period, noting that the state’s governance structure remains stable and capable of ensuring continuity in policy implementation.
