President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to confirm the nomination of Joseph Olugbenga Tegbe as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The request was read during plenary on Tuesday by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, through a letter addressed to the upper chamber.

Citing Section 147(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), President Tinubu urged lawmakers to expedite consideration of the nomination, noting that ministerial appointments are subject to Senate confirmation.

In the same correspondence, the President also sought approval for the appointment of Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye as Minister of State, as well as Rabiu Abdullahi Umar as Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

Tegbe’s nomination as Minister of Power had earlier been announced last week. According to a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, “The nomination has been transmitted to the Senate for screening and confirmation in accordance with the Constitution.”

The nomination follows the resignation of former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who stepped down to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 elections.

Like his predecessor, Tegbe hails from Oyo State and brings extensive experience in fiscal and economic reform, with over 35 years across both public and private sectors.

He previously served as Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa, where he led initiatives focused on fiscal policy reform, institutional restructuring, and governance.

Over the years, Tegbe has advised various government institutions and private sector organisations on strategic reforms, regulatory systems, and investment frameworks.

Until his recent nomination, he was the Director General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP), where he played a key role in strengthening bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China.

The Senate is expected to commence the screening process in the coming days as part of constitutional procedures for confirming presidential nominees.
