Amnesty International has raised alarm over the continued detention of Kabiru Ibrahim Dallah, who has been held at Lafia Prison in Nasarawa State for over 40 days. Dallah was reportedly arrested last year for allegedly criticizing the Secretary to the Government of Nasarawa State, Mr. Laraban Shu’aibu Magaji.
The human rights organization described the charges against Dallah as “bogus” and warned that plans to prosecute him could amount to a sham trial. Efforts to secure his bail have reportedly been rejected, and Amnesty International says Dallah is being detained under deplorable conditions solely as a form of punishment.
“Kabiru Dallah is a victim of abuse of power and an attempt to silence critics. He must be immediately and unconditionally released,” the organization stated.
Amnesty International further highlighted a growing threat to freedom of expression in Nigeria, particularly for young people, citing an increase in arrests, harassment, and intimidation of individuals expressing critical opinions online.
The organization called on the Nigerian authorities to uphold citizens’ rights and end all forms of repression against those exercising their right to free expression.
