Gunmen have launched a deadly attack on Gebbe community in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State, leaving an undisclosed number of people dead and several others injured.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants struck the community suddenly, firing sporadically and throwing residents into panic. Many villagers reportedly fled to neighbouring communities and nearby bushes in a desperate bid to escape the violence.
Local sources said the exact number of casualties remains unclear due to the scale of the attack and the displacement of residents to different locations. The community, which has reportedly not experienced such violence in recent years, has been left traumatised.
Confirming the incident, the Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, said police operatives have been deployed to the area to assess the situation.
According to him, security personnel are currently working to ascertain the number of casualties and injured persons, adding that an official update would be released in due course.
Some residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that security agencies have mobilised to the community following the attack.
They called on the state and federal governments to urgently intervene and reinforce security, describing the incident as unprecedented in the history of Gebbe community.
